Interview with Kuzu

Q: Since when do you wear Harajuku-fashion? / Seit wann trägst du Harajuku-Fashion?

A: Angefangen damit hab ich als ich 13 (?) war, also vor ca. 4 Jahren. Ich trug damals eine Art Oshare Casual mix. Zum Glück hab ich damals nicht viele Fotos davon gemacht, dementsprechend gibt’s von den ganz peinlichen Outfits auch keine Fotos, haha.
Bei meinem zweiten Japantag (2010 ) hab ich dann ein Lolita Kleid getragen und da ging es, meiner Meinung nach los, dass ich mich mehr damit beschäftig hab und auch andere Sachen ausprobiert habe.I started when I was 13 (?) , so around 4 years ago. Back then I used to wear some kind of Oshare Casual mix. Luckily I didn't take many photos, therefore there aren't any pictures of all those embarrassing outfits, haha.
At my second Japanday (2010) I wore a Lolita dress and I got more interested in japanese fashion and also experimented a lot.

Q: How did you get to know Harajuku-Fashion? / Wie bist du auf Harajuku-Fashion gekommen?

A: Ich denke, dass abzusehen war, dass ich irgendwann mal dazu komme. Meine Schwester und ich haben uns schon sehr lange für die ganzen alten Animes interessiert. Eine Zeit lang war ich relativ „normal“ und hab nur Pokemon gespielt. Als ich dann aber Naruto entdeckt hab, hab ich auch endlich angefangen Mangas intensiv zu kaufen (vorher haben meine Schwester und ich uns nur einmal im Jahr wenn wir auf einer Messe waren welche gekauft).
Irgendwann hat meine Schwester dann was über Oshare und Decora herausgefunden. Ich fands auch interessant und naja ich glaub ein Jahr später (?) hab ich mich damit auch mal pobiert.

I think it could be foreseen that I'd get into this style. My sister and I were already interested in all the old animes. For a while I was quite „normal“ and only plaid Pokemon. However when I discovered Naruto, I finally began buying Mangas on a regular basis (before my sister and I only bought them once a year at conventions). Some day my sister discovered Oshare and Decora. I was interested too and well, I think one year later (?) I tried to wear it myself.
Anyway you have to thank my sister that I got into Harajuku Fashion.


Q: What do you mainly love about it? / Was gefällt dir besonders daran?

A: Ich liebe die Farben. Im Alltag sehen die Menschen, für mich, alle gleich aus niemand wagt mal etwas neues. Höchstens im Sommer tragen sie mal etwas Farbe.I love the colours. To me, in everyday-life the people all look the same, nobody is creative. Only in summer they may wear some colours.
Q: Your inspiration? / Deine Inspiration?

A: Ich glaube, dass wäre dann wohl Tumblr, haha.
Man sieht da wirklich viele Arten von Stilrichtungen und da wird auch nicht so viel rumgehatet wie zum Beispiel auf Facebook oder Animexx ( na ja zumindest bekomme ich das auf Tumblr nicht mit, haha ).
Auf Tumblr gibt’s einfach alles. Die ganzen Streetsnaps aus Japan und eben auch Fotos von Menschen die man niemals auf irgendwelchen Seiten gefunden hätte, die aber trotzdem echt coole Sachen tragen.I guess that'd be Tumblr, haha.
There you can see lots of different styles, without all the haters from Facebook or Animexx (or at least I don't notice them, haha).
On Tumblr you find nearly everything. All those streetsnaps from Japan, but also those pictures of people that you wouldn't have foundotherwise, who wear really cool stuff though!


Q: What do your family and the people at school/work think about your style? / Was sagen deine Familie und deine Schulkameraden/Arbeitskollegen zu deinem Style?

A: Meiner Familie ist das eigentlich egal. Wie mein Opa stets zu sagen pflegt;  “Solange du gute Noten hast kannst du dir das leisten”.
Der einzige der immer noch skeptisch ist, ist mein Vater und seine Freundin. Die nerven einen manchmal damit und auf Familien Feiern kommen sie immer und schauen, dass wir ja einigermaßen ‘normal’ aussehen. Aber ich bin da nicht oft also stört es mich auch nicht.
Ich hab echt Glück mit meiner Klasse gehabt. Die interessiert das gar nicht und ich komm mit allen gut klar. Es gibt allerdings Klassen unter mir, die versuchen irgendwas dagegen zu sagen oder sich über mich lustig zu machen, dabei sind die zwei Köpfe kleiner als ich, wtf?My family doen't really care about it. My grandpa always says "As long as you have good marks, it's fine".
The only people who are sceptical with it are my father and his girlfriend. Sometimes they're annoying and want me to look "normal" in my family's presence. However I'm not there often, so it doesn't bother me.
I was really lucky with my class. They don't care at all and I get along with everyone. Anyway there are little kids who try to make fun of me, although they're much younger than me, wtf?


Q: Did your life change because you started with Harajuku-fashion? / Hat sich dein Leben dadurch, dass du auf die Szene gekommen bist, irgendwie verändert?

A: OH JA ! ABER SOWAS VON !
Ich hab zum Beispiel so gut wie kein Geld mehr, haha.
Denn leider, leider liegen meine Interessen nicht nur in dem Style sondern auch in Mangas, Animes und J-Rock. Und das alles geht schon ordentlich auf meine Geldbörse…
Allerdings hab ich auch wirklich SEHR viele Freunde dazu gewonnen. Ich hab Leute getroffen, die die gleichen Interessen haben und genauso bekloppt sind wie ich.
Haha und dadurch, dass ich sehr viele Conventions und auch einige Konzerte besuche habe ich auch schon echt viel gesehen und bin super viel rumgekommen.YES! YOU CAN BE SURE ABOUT THAT!
For example, I have nearly no money anymore, haha.
Because sadly my interests don't restrict to the style, but also to Mangas, Animes and J-Rock. And all that really stresses out my wallet... Nonetheless I got to know MANY new friends. I met people that have the same hobbies and are as silly as I am. Haha and since I've been to many many conventions and concerts, I have seen much and visited many places.


Q: Which styles do you like and which not? / Welche Stile magst du besonders und welche nicht?
A: Ich liebe alles bunte. Heißt, Decora, Oshare und Cyber kei. Allerdings mag ich auch Visual kei, also wenn mans gut macht.
Was ich nicht sonderlich mag ist Gyaru. Bzw ich versteh die Logik dahinter nicht.
Europäer die versuchen wie Japaner auszusehen, die wiederum wie Europäer aussehen wollen? Rokku Gyaru find ich allerdings interessant.
Wenn jemand aber ein gutes Outfit und so trägt dann erkenne ich das aber natürlich an.I love all the colourful styles, e.g. Decora, Oshare and Cyber kei, but I also like Visual kei.
I don't really like Gyaru, or I rather don't understand it. Europeans/Americans who try to look like Japaneses who try to like like Europeans/Americans? But I indeed find rokku gyaru quite interesting. Also, when somebody wears I nice outfit, I can appreciate it.


Q: What type of music do you listen to? / Welche Musik hörst du gerne?

A: Meiner Meinung nach gibt es in jedem Genre ein Lied was man mag.
Und ich hör wirklich alles, allerdings mit einem anderen Intensivitätsgrad. Das geht dann von Klassik bis Metal.
Was ich allerdings echt viel höre ist Rock in allen Arten. Vorzüglich japanischen und amerikanischen Rock.
Ich hör aber auch total normale Charts Lieder, haha.In my opinion there's a song you like in every genre.
And I really listen to everything, although the intensity varies. That goes from classic to metal.
But I think my favourite genre is rock, especially japanese and american rock.
I also listen to totally normal chart-stuff haha.


Q: Has your taste in music something to do with your fashion? / Hat dein Musik-Geschmack Einfluss auf deine Kleidung?

A: Ich denke nicht.
Die Bands, die ich höre, sind eher ‘härter’ wie zum Beispiel Alsdead, Lustknot, Crossfaith etc.
Die haben also rein gar nicht mit den Stilen zutun die ich ausprobiere.
Früher vielleicht. Als ich angefangen hab, hab ich eher LM.C gehört und mich auch dementsprechend gekleidet. Aber heutzutage nicht mehr.I don't think so.
The bands I like are kind of „harder“, e.g. Alsdead, Lustknot, Crossfaith etc., they don't have to do anything with the styles I wear.
Years ago, maybe, when I listened to LM.C most of the time. But not anymore.

Q: Do you think "normal" people are different from people in the "Harajuku-scene"? / Denkst du, "normale" Leute sind anders als Leute aus der "Harajuku-Szene"?

A: Definitiv nicht. Früher dachte ich das, als ich noch in meiner rosaroten Anfänger Welt war. Damals waren die ‘Normalen’ Menschen alle schlecht, weil sie meinen Stil nicht akzeptieren etc.
Aber ich trag die Sachen jetzt schon lang genug und ich hab die verschiedensten Menschen kennen gelernt.
Bestet Beispiel -OZ- Konzert 2011.
Das war mein erstes Konzert von einer VK Band, vorher war ich nur auf dem LM.C Konzert 2010.
Wir waren bunter gekleidet und eine Reaktion von einem VK-Typen war: „Geht mal lieber zu Ancafe!“
Also man sieht, es gibt auch genügend intolerante Menschen in der Szene. Definitely not. I thought so in the past, when I was new in the scene. Back then all „normal“ people were bad people cause they didn't accept my style etc.
But I wear this fashion for a long time now and I got to know lots of different people.
Best example: -OZ- concert 2011.
It was my second concert of a japanese band. In contrast to most of the other people we were dressed very colourful and the reaction of the „darker“ people was: „Better go to An Cafe!“
So you can see, there are also lots of intolerant people in the scene.
