Interview with Jojo

Q: Since when do you wear Harajuku-fashion? / Seit wann trägst du Harajuku-Fashion?

A: Mein erster Versuch war mit 14 Jahren, davor hatte ich mich schon eine Weile über die Stilrichtungen informiert. Am Anfang habe ich mich an die Oldschool Decoras aus Japan gehalten, allerdings ist mir bald aufgefallen, dass Oldschool Decora nicht genau das ist was ich machen wollte.
Deshalb habe ich recht früh angefangen mein eigenes Ding zu drehen. Ich machte schon früh ein sehr buntes Decora und war auch eine der wenigen Decoras in Deutschland mit komplett bunten Haaren. Damals war in Deutschland noch alles auf dem Pastel-Decora-Trip, darum wurde ich ziemlich fertig gemacht. Für 2-3 Wochen habe ich versucht mich an die deutschen Decoras anzupassen, allerdings war ich so unglücklich das ich es gleich wieder gelassen habe. Ich hab dann einfach mein Ding durchgezogen und das war gut so.
The first time was when I was 14, I had already collected some information before. At the beginning my role models were the Oldschool-Decoras from Japan, but I soon notices that this wasn't exactly what I wanted to do.
That's why I started following my own way very early. My own Decora-style was very colourful and only very few german Decoras had colourful hair at that time. Everyone did Pastel-Decora at that time and I was often bullied by other Decoras. For 2-3 weeks I tried to adapt to the other german Decoras, but I couldn't stand this. So I returned to Rainbow Decora and it felt good that way.


Q: How did you get to know Harajuku-Fashion? / Wie bist du auf Harajuku-Fashion gekommen?

A: Ich denke das ganze begann mit Pokémon, Digimon und den ganzen älteren Animes.. In der 5 Klasse hatte ich zum ersten mal einen Manga in der Hand und wurde zum Sammler. Jedenfalls habe ich mir irgendwann mal Openings von Animes angehört und dadurch irgendwie auf Girugämesh und Sadie gestoßen. Die Musik gefiel mir und ich wollte mehr über J-Rock erfahren. Ich habe mich informiert und kam dann auf Visual-Kei. Ich fands cool aber es war nicht so meins. Dann fand ich Oshare Kei und Decora und verliebte mich haha
I think everything started with Pokemon, Digimon and all the old animes. In 5^th grade I got my first manga and started collecting them. I also started listening to the opeings and somehow found Girugämesh and Sadie that way. I liked that kind of music and wanted to know more about J-Rock. I searched for information and got to know Visual Kei. It was cool but not really my type. Then I found out about Oshare Kei and Decora and fell in love haha


Q: What do you mainly love about it? / Was gefällt dir besonders daran?

A:  Ich fühle mich wohl wenn ich es trage. Ich fühle mich ''ganz'', irgendwie komplett.
I feel well while earing it. Somehow "complete".


Q: Your inspiration? / Deine Inspiration?

A: Definitiv Tumblr. Und vielleicht noch die Kera und meine Freunde natürlich.
Definitely Tumblr. And maybe the Kera-magazine and my friends of course.


Q: What do your family and the people at school/work think about your style? / Was sagen deine Familie und deine Schulkameraden/Arbeitskollegen zu deinem Style?

A: Zu meiner Familie habe ich nur noch teilweise Kontakt (außer natürlich zu meiner Schwester). Eigentlich habe ich nur noch Kontakt zu meiner Familie väterlicherseits. Mein Vater hasst es, seine Freundin auch, es kommen oft dumme Sprüche aber im großen und ganzem akzeptieren sie es. Der Rest findet es entweder total cool oder total scheiße. Meine Arbeitskollegen finden es lustig, manche sogar cool. Ich habe von ihnen noch nie offen etwas negatives darüber gehört, allerdings rede ich mit denen auch nicht viel darüber.
I'm not really in touch with my family (except my sister of course), only with my father's family. My dad and his girlfriend hate it, they often make fun of me but they accept it somehow. The others either hate it or think it's pretty cool.
My workmates find it kinda funny, sometimes even cool. I've never heard anything negative, but I don't really talk about it.


Q: Did your life change because you started with Harajuku-fashion? / Hat sich dein Leben dadurch, dass du auf die Szene gekommen bist, irgendwie verändert?

A: Definitiv. Ich bin viel selbstbewusster geworden. Außerdem ist Harajuku-Fashion / die Japanszene das einzige Hobby dem ich Seit Jahren treu bin. Das ist ziemlich ungewöhnlich bei mir da ich schnell das Interesse an Dingen verliere. Außerdem habe ich die besten, tollsten und geilsten Freunde die man sich wünschen kann kennen gelernt. Ich habe viele tolle Erfahrungen gemacht und bin einfach glücklicher als vorher.
Definitely. I became much more self-confident. Also Harajuku-fashion is the only hobby I have been followeing for years. That's very unusual cause I often lose interest after a short time. And I found the best friends you can ever think of. I made lots of great experiences and I'm much happier than before.
Q: Which styles do you like and which not? / Welche Stile magst du besonders und welche nicht?

A: Meine große Liebe ist eigentlich Rainbow Decora, aber ich liebe auch Cyber Kei, Oshare Kei und Hadeko und ich liebe es diese Stilrichtungen zu mischen. Ich mag auch Visual Kei, Fairy Kei und andere Decora-Stile, allerdings nicht an mir. Achja und Manba.
Ich mag Gyaru nicht wirklich und Lolita interessiert mich nicht.
Actually my heart belongs to Rainbow Decora, but I also love Cyber Kei, Oshare Kei and Hadeko and I love mixing them. I also like Visual Kei, Fairy Kei and the other Decora-typesm but not on me. Oh and Manba's cool, too.
I don't really like Gyaru and I'm not interested in Lolita.


Q: What type of music do you listen to? / Welche Musik hörst du gerne?

A: Hauptsächlich Rock und Metal (Sowohl japanisch, deutsch als auch englisch), aber ich höre auch viel Rap (hauptsächlich deutsch), Pop usw. Ich glaube ich mag eigentlich fast alles haha
Mainly rock and metal (japanese as well as german and english), but I also like rap (mainly german), pop etc. I think I like nearly everything haha
Q: Has your taste in music something to do with your fashion? / Hat dein Musik-Geschmack Einfluss auf deine Kleidung?

A: Nein, ich glaube es wäre seltsam wenn Marilyn Manson meine Kleidung beeinflussen würde. Oder Kollegah.
No, I believe I'd be strange if Marilyn Manson influenced my clothing. Or Kollegah.
Q: Do you think "normal" people are different from people in the "Harajuku-scene"? / Denkst du, "normale" Leute sind anders als Leute aus der "Harajuku-Szene"?

A: Man könnte denken, dass Leute aus der Szene toleranter sind als „normale“ Leute, aber nein. Es gibt solche und solche Menschen. Die Decoras gehören noch zu den harmloseren Gruppen (man siehe Lolita- oder Gyaru-Secrets), aber selbst dort wird gelästert.
Und dann machen sich die Gruppen gegenseitig fertig. Die „Dunklen“ gegen die „Bunten“ oder die Lolitas gegen die Gyarus. Also nein das einzige was uns von denen unterscheidet ist unsere Liebe für Japan und unser Äußeres. One could may think people in the scene are more tolerant than „normal“ people, but no. Some people are like this and some are like that. The Decoras fortunately belong to the more harmless groups (just look at Lolita- or Gyaru-Secrets), but even there people are bullied and rumours are spread.
And then the groups quarrel with each other. The „dark ones“ vs the „colourful ones“ or the Lolitas against the Gyarus. The only difference between us and „normal“ people are our love for Japan and our fashion.
